| My desire is to have my work find a use in the everyday life of the user. I use simple forms, which I make by slip-casting, I then apply my graphic designs so that they work with the forms in a harmonious collaboration. When painting the surfaces of the work, either by direct handpainting or a process of layering with wax- resist I find that the shapes dictate how the pattern moves on a piece. I find this most exicting because each piece has its own way of interpreting what is applied to the surface. Each shape is a challenge in finding the right combination in the pattern that will work with the shape.
The patterns that I incorporate into the pieces are gathered from my interest in Mimbres pottery and textile design. I feel that I have combined aspects of these interests and have created something unique. Vivid colors with bold pattern which evolve with every new piece or idea that I bring to the creative process. Matthew A. Yanchuk |
