| I can't remember a time in my life not filled with art. I was always encouraged with my craft by those around me. It's been a life long process for me to be where I am today. I have worked with a number of different media, including pen and pencil, papier mache, acrylic paints, screenprinting and airbrushing. All have which lead me to my love of ceramics. My beginnings with this medium started with my background in screenprinting. I began the unconventional process of airbrushing and screenprinting onto manufactured tiles. I was quite content with this process until my husband urged me to try my hand at working with clay, in this way I could create my own signature pieces, rather than being confined to a square tile, so with much resistance I began this new adventure. I initially began making slab clocks and mirrors, this then evolved into experimenting with building objects. It's been a self-taught process filled with both frustrations and successes. I've found a real sense of freedom and boundless possibilities in moulding the clay into what my eye can see. I enjoy each step of the process from sketching the idea to building the piece to my true love of working in the exciting world of color to give my pieces their final pop!
All of my pieces are individually made from slab construction, they are colorfully underglazed with a playful surface decoration and finally glazed with a clear food-safe finish. Jennifer Nersesian |
